Why A Growth Mindset Is Essential For Entrepreneurs
If you're wondering how mindset development is essential for your newly developing business or practice, read on my friend. By the same token, if you've already grown your business to the place you want - never mind - Just go relax in a hammock beside the sea on your favorite tropical island! Most of the best entrepreneurs who have begun the journey of living their dreams are simply being and doing more of who they are.
And on this journey all of us must come face to face with a dangerous tiger, an edge, and an obstacle of some sort. Often, we aren't even aware of the real problem we are facing, let alone how we might begin to move through it. Unfortunately we usually don't mind staying warm and cozy inside our "fixed mindsets". It's so much easier to think the way we've always thought and do what we've always done.
But, the only way to achieve goals is to move into the "growth mindset" zone. So what is a growth mindset, anyway? A very forward-thinking educator, Stanford Professor Carol Dweck, writes about this in her 2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Carol categorizes two very different poles on the mindset spectrum, and characterizes our basic ideas about how we see ourselves:
- When operating from a fixed mindset, "your qualities are carved in stone." In this place your capabilities and possibilities seem finite and are coming from a place of lack. From this point of view you see your qualities and skills as predetermined. You believe that you will continue to lack what you need to go beyond where you already are. While coming from this fixed mindset you also apply this thinking to the qualities others have, and tend to limit your ability to learn from what others have to teach.
- Once you adopt a growth mindset, "your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts...everyone can change and grow through application and experience." Of course one's basic intelligence is a starting point, but success comes as a result of effort, learning, and persistence. From a growth mindset perspective, we are always in the "beginners mind" zone, eager to learn and grow, confident that we have all we need within ourselves and the world around us to achieve our goals.
As you are becoming more and more "smart" as an entrepreneur you must develop an awareness of which mindset you are coming from. This will allow you to expand your thinking habits to be able to just "be with" whatever arises. What happens when we become more of an observer of our thoughts is that we plant seeds of confidence. As our confidence develops it grows into curiosity. And soon our business project is moving along very rapidly, sometimes going in strange directions we never would have expected. When we gear towards growth and expansion we open what I call the "heart mind" (more about this in another post). This is a place in which we become more and more compassionate towards ourselves and others as we practice curiosity towards everything - the good, bad and indifferent. When we have this "don't know mindset" amazing possibilities start to emerge. Even the hardships and stresses we meet in the process of being in the moment become graciously accepted as teachers on our path.
In a way, while living inside a growth mindset the goal is not really "where it's at"! The present moment real-life predicaments we find ourselves in are juicy fodder for our "growth mindset". And as we simply allow each moment to unfold, being fully present with it, our own inner wise mind will teach us invaluable lessons. Once you see that you are operating from a possibility mindset, you can quickly move way out there on that limb where many new ideas and connections will manifest for you. This occurs when you have entered into the "growth mindset" zone.
Mindset development is essential for smart entrepreneurs who wish to grow their business to greater heights. In other posts I will offer exercises and strategies for building a bridge to a growth mindset. In the meantime, just remember - choosing to stay in the comfortable fixed mindset zone is mighty dangerous for your business. Discovering ways to increase your awareness of being either in a fixed or a growth mindset is crucial - not only to getting more business, but in living your dreams, period.
You see, having the proper mindset not only determines what we perceive in "the world out there" but it either limits or expands our ability to see possibilities in the first place! I invite you to begin to look for the unusual and unexpected connections you are making.
Perhaps you can become a bit more curious about how these seemingly accidental events relate to the growth of your business and your mindset. And, if you really want to walk the smart entrepreneur's tightrope, give yourself the challenge of doing, thinking or being in some small way, a little bit different, at least once a week. I'll let you figure out your own definition of "different" - but make a weekly habit of it. It will work wonders for your business!

Five Secrets to Unlimited Motivation
Motiv-Hate or Motivate
5 secrets for unlimited Motivation
In life we need energy to live, to exist and to do things with our life and with others. Yet sometimes we can miss life through talking ourselves out of it. Just like this:
• I just can't be bothered
• It's just too much effort, I'm tired
• It's not worth it, who cares
• Sure, one of these days...
• Yes, I know that I should, but...
• It's just too much effort, I'm tired
• It's not worth it, who cares
• Sure, one of these days...
• Yes, I know that I should, but...
Sound familiar? If this is you, and you are saying this to yourself and or to others, you are lacking one of the key ingredients in the recipe of life, MOTIVATION:
MOTIVATION; the psychological feature that arouses an individual to action toward a wanted goal; the reason for the action
MOTIVATION; the psychological feature that arouses an individual to action toward a wanted goal; the reason for the action
So, we can define motivation but does that help? Usually not enough! What is this thing called 'motivation'? Where do you find it? How can we get motivated?
The first secret to share here is Secret No.1 'motivation is not a thing' it is not a noun. You will never trip over motivation that someone has left in the bathroom, nor will you find a chunk of it in the fridge! Has anyone ever bought a kilo of motivation from the shop? I think not!
If that is the case, then what is motivation, how can we be motivated and more importantly how can we motivate ourselves? Would you like unlimited motivation, does this interest you? If so, read on because that is the design of this article.
Motivation is a set of thinking strategies or processes that we run for ourselves... Did you notice what you just read? '...That we run ourselves! What does this mean? It means that we are responsible for how motivated or not we are! It means there is no point looking to another to provide motivation for us; in fact it is impossible for another person to motivate us, only we can decide what is or is not motivational to us. So Secret No.2 to motivation is 'we are responsible for the amount of motivation we have'. Can you start to sense the power you have over yourself when you take responsibility for you?
What is it that drives us to feel motivated? What drives motivation? Further, how does motivation drive us toward what we want, need or believe? What is this fuel? The answer brings us to secret No. 3, 'emotions are the fuel of motivation' and ultimately are what drive us! Let us take a look at how emotions 'drive or move us to action, the best place to start may be with the word 'emotion'.
E-motion, as we look more closely at this word we can see its structure.
'E-nergy in motion';(e motion). Our emotions are our energy. Typically we can put emotions' into three distinctive categories:
• Positive
• Neutral
• Negative
• Positive
• Neutral
• Negative
As we can define our emotions into these three simple types, then what does that also say about our energy? Well, we can make the same distinctions for our types of energy; positive, neutral and negative energy. This leads us to Secret No.4 'People are motivated and can motivate themselves using these 3 different types of energy' so can you!
The affect of positive emotion often gives us the energy to move toward what we want or need, we somehow feel pulled or drawn (motivated). As we experience neutral emotions we can 'take it or leave it' and with negative emotions we experience discomfort, a form of pain and we (are motivated) try to get or move away from the cause of such. We can represent this with a diagram:
The Axis of Motivation
Whether we move away from the pain and consequences or toward the good feelings or outcomes in our life, both create energy that we put into motion to do something. This is motivation. Now what this gives us is a strategy for developing unlimited motivation for anything we want to do or have in life.
Typically, human beings have a preference to which end of the motivational axis they motivate or get motivated by. We can ask ourselves some questions to identify our own preference for getting motivated. Ask yourself the following questions and notice if you are motivated toward what you want or away from what you don't want:
I get out of bed in the morning;
1. Because I have to (away from)
2. Because I want to start the day (toward)
1. Because I have to (away from)
2. Because I want to start the day (toward)
I take my medicine regularly;
1. Because I want to be well and live life as fully as I can (toward)
2. Because if I don't I will become ill or possibly die (away from)
1. Because I want to be well and live life as fully as I can (toward)
2. Because if I don't I will become ill or possibly die (away from)
When asked I will go out and socialise with others;
1. Because I like to meet and be with other people (toward)
2. Because it is rude not too and I don't want to upset anyone (away from)
1. Because I like to meet and be with other people (toward)
2. Because it is rude not too and I don't want to upset anyone (away from)
I keep my home tidy;
1. Because I like it like that (toward)
2. Because I get moaned at if I don't, or someone unexpected may come round (away from)
1. Because I like it like that (toward)
2. Because I get moaned at if I don't, or someone unexpected may come round (away from)
I understand that regular exercise is healthy for you;
1. And I exercise because I want to get the health benefits from it (toward)
2. And I exercise because if I don't my health may get worse (away from)
1. And I exercise because I want to get the health benefits from it (toward)
2. And I exercise because if I don't my health may get worse (away from)
I do things;
1. Because I can
2. Because I have to
1. Because I can
2. Because I have to
How many 'towards' or 'away from' did you identify with? Most people will find themselves using motivation at just one end of the axis, either mainly toward or mainly away from.
Now that you have this understanding on how YOU are typically motivated, we can move to Secret No.5.
This secret is the one that brings all the other secrets together and will show you how to get unlimited amounts of motivation for the rest of your life! Secret No.5 says 'Combine both away from and toward energies at the same time and you will create a personal motivation that propels you into action'! By becoming aware of the other energy available to you, at the other end of the motivation axis you can ramp up the emotional motivation to get you to take action, to feel motivated and finally in control of you!
Either now or later, take 5 minutes to take yourself through the unlimited motivation pattern below. These x simple questions can be applied to anything that you need more motivation for, any time, anywhere. After you have used this pattern a couple of times you will be motivating yourself and possibly other like an expert!
The Unlimited Amounts of Motivation Pattern
1. Identify something in your life you want to have or be more motivated about (This can be anything, getting out more, going to the gym, or doing the housework, anything...)
2. Once you have identified something, write it down so you don't forget what you are working on
3. Notice your current motivation style associated with this activity, are you motivated away from or toward? If you are away from read and ask yourself part A, if you are toward, read and ask yourself part B
2. Once you have identified something, write it down so you don't forget what you are working on
3. Notice your current motivation style associated with this activity, are you motivated away from or toward? If you are away from read and ask yourself part A, if you are toward, read and ask yourself part B
Part A, You are moving away from the pain or consequences, but you can put up with it for awhile. First notice how real the discomfort is, what else could be a problem or even more painful if you don't take action on this.
To add even more energy to your motivation notice what you will get that is good or pleasurable once you have taken the action or started the activity. Notice how good it feels and how good it will feel when you have completed this activity... So as you experience all of this about that activity, notice just how much energy you have for taking the step to be doing it... Go do it then!
Part B, You are moving toward the activity, but it doesn't pull on you enough to take any action. First notice just what attracts or pulls you toward it in the first place, that's right, now as you think about that, ask yourself, what is important to me about this...
What does the importance of this mean to you, how do you feel about it now, knowing this? Just imagine what it would mean if you never did this, you would never realise this meaning and its importance. It could be the start of procrastinating on other important and meaningful things in life, you wouldn't want that to be true would you? Be with this awareness, notice the heightened pleasure and possible pain if you don't act on this as soon as you can... Just now, notice HOW much energy and motivation you know have for this... Get on with it then!
Congratulate yourself on doing or starting the activity, notice how well you can motivate you to take the actions that are important to you. Notice the sense of independence and pride you have for yourself as you read this and start to take the first steps to becoming expert at developing your own motivation, imagine the possibilities you now have for your life...now.

Be Authentic - Love Who You Are, Flaws and All
You are one of a kind! No two people in the entire world are the same. Both good and bad past life experiences have made you who you are today. The good times have helped you learn happiness, compassion and love. Even the difficult and gruelling times in life have taught you strength and perseverance. Be authentic to you and honour your self as the unique being that you are, flaws and all.
So often, we tend to compare ourselves to others and this is so unfair. By comparing yourself to others, you do yourself a huge injustice because again, no two people are the same. Only you know the life you've lived and the lessons in life that you've learned. No other person on this earth has lived and learned, or are still learning to follow their path exactly the way you are today.
As an example, in the car dealership world, you can pick up a new car for the same price as everyone else. There's not much wiggle room when there are about a hundred of them on the lot with only one or two tiny differences. But if you're looking for a used car, you can be certain that your going to pay top dollar because there are no two used cars that are the same and the dealership know this. They play on that so that you love this car and when there are no others like it here or down the road, you'll pay more for it. You as a person are no different. Treasure yourself, your uniqueness and even your flaws, because they too, are what make you who you are.
Be authentic and accepting of yourself, flaws and all. If there's something you truly want to change, then do it, but love and accept yourself in the process. No one has lived what you lived, so you've earned it! Truly, each of us is our own worst critic and it certainly takes courage and self-respect to accept ourselves completely. See your value, take responsibility for who you are, the way you live, and your own happiness!

The Best Advice for Time Management
Farah's struggling. She's got a lot to do, and the day just seems to get away from her. The 40 minutes she spent surfing Instagram didn't help her cross items off her list, but it was the only break from work that she took all day.
Still, at the end of the day, she feels unsatisfied and downcast because she didn't complete what she had on her to-do list. Farah thinks she has a time management problem.
Farah's problem isn't time management. It's even bigger than that.
Remember a day when you got three times as much done in the same time frame on the previous day? You had the same number of hours on those days as you did on the 'meh' accomplishment days, right?
We all do. So what got you going on those high achievement days?
Focus.
What makes you focus? Something important you want to do, a goal you want to reach. What makes you focus is the impact you want to have.
Farah's big problem was that she wasn't clear on her intended impact, and she wasn't putting it into action.
I define impact like this: impact is where your amazing self meets the world and makes it a better place. It's about you doing whatever you can to be your amazing self AND it's about contributing to others and making a difference.
When you have your intended impact in mind, you can tear through things that take 3 times longer when you don't have anything in mind but profit or another item to cross off a list.
Impact is your big picture. Your vision for impact carries you forward, with focus. You're more motivated, you move through challenges more quickly, and you're happier!
Your business is made of individual days. They add up to create your business life. Life with impact is sweeter and better. And businesses with impact make more money.
Those are two of the many reasons I work with my clients on defining their intentions for having impact. With impact as your focus, you can manage your energy (and your time) in a way that lets you get things done.
When we worked together on this, Farah had a breakthrough. With her energy and her impact in mind, we created a new way of working for her:
- She set priorities that moved her closer to her intended impact.
- She limited those priorities to 3 a day.
- She did what was most important to her impact first.
- She challenged herself to get things done more quickly.
The result? More gets done. She feels more at ease, yet more accomplished. She has more impact.
Want to get more done? Focus on your impact. It'll carry you through big projects and small ones, as you make a difference.

Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg: Powerful Women Are Stopped By Internal Barriers
I just finished reading Sheryl Sandberg's new book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. It was so fascinating I could hardly put it down. Sandberg pulls back the curtain on life at the top for women in corporate America. And while she is rigorous about appreciating the many gains women have made, she is frank about data that shows how under-represented women are at the top of the corporate ladder.
Rather than blame, Sandberg takes an unflinching look at the ways that women continue to sabotage their own success by making choices based on their own fears and false beliefs. She shares the persistent feelings of self-doubt that she encountered in college and how she has continued to face down these doubts as she has seen them surface. She shares fascinating stories of other women executives who have faced doubt and a lack of self-confidence in the course of building their careers.
She offers a very honest look at the choices she made when her first child was born and she was an executive at Google. While she intended to take maternity leave when her son was born, her fears of losing influence caused her to work from home during her entire leave. By the time her second child was born, she was more secure and confident, and was able to take a full maternity leave without checking in with her office at all, and no negative consequences to her position.
While there a consistent emphasis on research studies and data to back up every assertion in the book, what I found most fascinating is Sandberg's willingness to share stories of women executives, her own as well as others, that demonstrate how often a women's main barrier to corporate success is her own belief system.
Our culture, beginning in our earliest childhood experiences, moulds women for care-taking roles and invisibility. Often successful women have become adept at "making it in a man's world" by developing masculine energy: the energy of competition, analysis, linear thinking, goal attainment, and left-brained perception of circumstances. The price paid is often a lack of development of feminine energies: creative, intuitive, collaborative and relational energies. This leads eventually to burn out and a lack of fulfillment. The "is that all there is" experience becomes pervasive.
I believe we are facing challenges in the world that reflect this imbalance. Technology has given us every advantage in terms of business development, but at the price of polluted air, fouled water, the breakdown of our global financial systems, burned out adults, troubled children, and broken homes.
As a culture we need to move more into balance now. I believe that women leaders have a key role to play in this transition. By honouring their own needs for achievement in the workplace and finding ways to bring the strength and creativity of their feminine energies into contemporary problem-solving, they will forge new pathways to greatness for themselves and the corporations for which they work.
With the help and support of their husbands (who have accessed their own feminine energies) they will raise children who have seen both masculine and feminine energies modelled in their mother and their father. These children will grow up to create a more balanced, harmonious world.
As new more balanced business structures evolve to meet the needs of the marketplace, culture itself will evolve. While this will surely take many generations, we as women can start right here, right now, to see the deeper truth of who we are and access our feminine energies. As we do so we break through the barriers of false beliefs that act as a glass ceiling to our ability to achieve our highest potential.
One decision at a time we can restore balance to our lives and take a stand for greater harmony in our world. It is time for us to own the power that comes from the realization of our true being and allow that power to inform our choices. I stand with Ms. Sandberg in calling on women to embrace their heart's desires, go for their dreams, and consistently Lean In.

The 3 Keys to Self-Discovery Do You Want To Know Who You Really Are?
The 3 Keys to Self-Discovery
Source
Who are you? “Oh, this is an easy answer”, but is it really? Who are you or who am I really? It’s easy to assume that we have true knowledge of self, but have we really questioned ourselves? I know the answer for most would be an automatic NO. We are all programmed growing up to protect ourselves from discomfort and danger it is only as we become wiser that we realize that is where the most growth lies & if we ever want to achieve great things we have to be brave enough to put our selves on the edge and honest enough to admit that we have a lot to learn about ourselves. My self-discovery has three keys to establishing that foundational self-discovery. Make yourself uncomfortable, educate yourself, be alone and great growth will follow.
Step 1. Self-Education
The first step to self-discovery is educating yourself for yourself. This means that you must remove all tradition and what you’ve learned throughout your entire life. It is time you question all that you were taught and told. You must even question your strongest beliefs and look at everything from many different views. This means that you must read books, have dialogue with strangers, and travel. Reading has done so much for me in my later years. Growing up, reading was the last thing that I would ever want to do and never in life thought it would be the key in my life transformation. I have read many books that have literally help change my life and my views of life. I have traveled to many states, and countries to discover new land and new cultures.
While traveling I have met amazing individuals that I had great conversations to help in my discovery. My trip to Thailand was the most amazing experience. I went to a bar in Bangkok, Thailand and met and older native sitting at the bar. He spoke English and was a practicing Buddhist, which he educated me greatly about Buddhism. I am not a Buddhist, but I now practice certain Buddhist traditions. I also asked my family several questions, why we had certain traditions, why are we Christian, and the why’s went on for hours. Even though I didn’t receive any concrete answers for any of my why’s. I was told “that’s just how things are and what was passed down to us”. I couldn’t accept an answer like that, and me educating myself on my own terms began to create the foundation for new meaning in my life.
Step 2. Removing Comfort
This education that I was getting for myself also created some discomfort. I was learning new things and found out that there is no right or wrong way to look at things in this life. People have made me think that there is only a right way and of course it’s their way. Educating myself has made me uncomfortable with family, friends, and society. I have also made myself uncomfortable with self-challenges.
Challenging what you think is not possible will remove comfort from your life totally. Going to a mosque when you are Christian is a challenge of comfort. Moving to another state or country when you don’t have any family or friends there is a challenge of comfort. Try new foods, new activities, and tackle all physical and mental fears. When you challenge your mental comfort, you will see what you are capable of and possibly discover something you like along the way. You can read about sky-diving and know everything about the activity but it’s nothing compared the physically act of sky-diving. Go ahead and try new things and you will learn more about yourself than ever before.
Step 3. Be Alone
Now while you are educating and removing comfort from your life, no one should be along for this ride. The journey of self-discovery is exactly for the first part “self”. Being alone removes opinions, judgement, and all the other unnecessary distractions. Being alone will help you master your thoughts and meditate to clear your thoughts as well. I want you to know that being alone does not mean you’re lonely. Loneliness is a feeling of insecurity, trauma, and grief, and being alone is self-love, healing, and secure.
I know we confuse the two often and it makes people feel like they always need someone with them on great adventures. This alone time will give you time to develop your thoughts and master your conscious and subconscious. We have full control of our thoughts and it seems that they run amuck when we are alone, but we can control them. We have full control of our minds and bodies, but we must become conscious of that during self-discovery. Meditate, pray, change bad thoughts into great thoughts, and beat positivity into your subconscious by reading, watching, eating, and listening to just positivity. Being alone and deciding of what you want to think is all in your power.
Continue Discovering
This may sound great but true self-discovery is never established because we are forever evolving. You can greatly accelerate you self-discovery but you can never complete it, as it’s a continual process. This start is just the first chapter of your new life. You must understand that you want to create a foundation of your own and not the one that was given to you. This is the epitome of living your own life and being an adult. You must always educate yourself, travel, remove comfort, and value your alone time. Your life’s foundation may change after some time, but the best part of the change is that you are changing it and no-one else is influencing your decisions. Self-discovery is liberating, scary, and exhilarating and should be done by us all as adults. Now go and be yourself and not what someone made you.
