I want to be clear about something at the start, because this subject attracts a kind of commentary that I think misses the point almost entirely. People pleasers are not weak. They are not doormats, not spineless, not lacking in intelligence or strength. They are often the most perceptive, emotionally capable, genuinely caring people in the room. They simply learned, somewhere — usually quite early — that their own needs, opinions, and feelings had a way of causing problems. So they learned to tuck those things away and make themselves agreeable instead.
That was, at one point, a genuinely useful strategy. The problem is that strategies
