Why You Keep Choosing People Who Can't Choose You Back
It isn't bad luck, and it isn't a type. It's a pattern — and patterns can change.
You've noticed the pattern by now, even if you've never said it out loud: the people who are steady, available, and genuinely interested feel a little boring. The ones who are inconsistent, hard to read, and occasionally pull away are the ones who hold your attention. That's not a coincidence, and it's not about taste — it's attachment, working exactly as it learned to.
If love in your early life came with conditions, or arrived unpredictably, part of you learned that inconsistency is what love feels like. So consistency, when it finally shows up, can register as suspicious — or simply unfamiliar enough to feel like nothing at all.
Healthy doesn't always feel exciting at first
This is the part that trips so many of us up: a genuinely healthy relationship often feels calm rather than electric, especially at the start. If your nervous system is used to reading anxiety as chemistry, calm can feel like nothing is happening. It takes time — and a little self-awareness — to relearn that steady isn't the same as boring.
Worth sitting with:
1. In past relationships, did "excitement" often come paired with anxiety or uncertainty?
2. How do I actually feel around people who are consistently kind and available?
3. Am I choosing someone, or am I chasing the feeling of chasing someone?
Rewriting the pattern, not just the partner
Swapping one unavailable person for another won't change the pattern — the pattern lives in you, not in who you happen to meet next. Real change starts with getting honest about what you actually need to feel safe, and then practicing staying present with people who can actually offer it, even when it feels unfamiliar at first.
